Swimming Pool Info >> Minnesota Pool Filter Facts

At Atlantis Pool & Spa, we know that pool clarity and beauty is crucial to your family’s enjoyment, health, and safety. That’s why we recommend and specify Hayward pool filters for the pools we build and for upgrading existing pools. Hayward supplies every type of pool filter, so whatever your choice of filter type, there’s a Hayward filter system that is ideal for your individual pool. To help you understand pool filtration, here is a guide to pool filter types.
Selecting a Pool Filter for Your Minneapolis St. Paul Swimming Pool
There are three basic types of pool filtration system, each with its own characteristics:
- Sand Filters – Sand filters are the oldest and most frequently used type of swimming pool filtration. Water is pumped through a container of specially graded filter sand, where it flows from the top to the bottom of the filter. As it does, particles as small as 20-40 microns are trapped in the spaces between the sand grains and removed from your pool’s water. Every few weeks, the water flow is reversed and the accumulated material is flushed out of the sand and down the drain.
- Cartridge Filters – In a cartridge filter system, the pool water is passed through a filter cartridge, where particles as small as 10-15 microns are trapped. These filters require lower water pressure, which reduces backpressure on the pump. The filters are cleaned once or twice a season by simply hosing them off.
- Diatomaceous Earth Filters – These filters use a filter medium made up of countless millions of fossilized diatoms – microscopic skeletons of prehistoric life forms. This diatomaceous earth coats grids in the filter housing and removes particles as small as 5 microns in size. As with sand filters, these filters are cleaned by back flushing, which gets rid of the accumulated debris and sends it down the drain.
For Pool Filters, It’s The Particle Size That Matters
As you can see from the above descriptions, sand filters work to remove only larger sized debris particles while cartridge filters remove even smaller particles. Diatomaceous earth filters remove even the smallest particles. All produce clean, clear pool water, but you have a choice when specifying a filter system for your pool.
Hayward Pool Products manufactures a full range of filters in all of these three types. Depending on how your pool is used and your goals for water clarity, you may choose one or another of these filtration systems. At Atlantis Pool & Spa, we know that a Hayward Pool Filter will handle the job efficiently and reliably, no matter which system you choose.
